Daily Quote and Video: Reincarnation and Rebirth (of Slick)

Today feels like a good day to discuss rebirth. I've never been able to consider (beyond useful psychological metaphor) the reincarnation that occurs across lifetimes. There's really no way to posit unless you have some kind of cross-lifetime cognition, and beyond brief lucid moments of deja vu, I am clueless about what exactly occurs after death.

For me, rebirth is more about the cyclical nature of seasons, days, relationships, stages of life and yes of course, states of mind. Is reincarnation important as a Buddhist practitioner? That's one of  the biggest topics of debate. Some say its meaningless (Dogen) and some say it's crucial (Many Tibetan and Theravadan teachers). Some say it was a remnant of vedic cultural beliefs. But to me, the day after Labor Day is the true Rebirth of the year (our calendar is all types of screwed up in this regard), and so a good day for a reincarnation-like quote from Thanissaro Bhikkhu, a scholar of Pali and Theravadan Buddhism. Check out his awesome (for Buddhist Geeks, at least) website, Access to Insight and read more than anyone ever wanted to know about the early Suttas. For Video of the Day, I decided to dig in the crates of a former lifetime and find the best song ever that includes the word Rebirth in the title. Any other reincarnation themed songs you can think of. Sorry if it's not dharmic enough for a Buddhist blog, but honestly, what is?

Digable Planets for the first day of the rest of your life, anyone?

Daily Quote

If you see that other people are suffering, and you’re in a position to help, you focus not on their karmic past but your karmic opportunity in the present: Some day you may find yourself in the same predicament that they’re in now, so here’s your opportunity to act in the way you’d like them to act toward you when that day comes.
